The January 12, 2010 earthquake was the worst natural disaster to strike Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest countries in the world. …200,000 casualties… 1.3 million are left homeless…hundreds of thousands injured. The media hoopla that surrounded the early days of this natural disaster has disappeared, but the Herculean challenges facing hundreds of thousands of children, women, and men in Haiti continue to prevail...

EMPOWER HAITI MAKESHIFT COMMUNITIES PROJECT
Empower Haiti Makeshift Communities is a two-phase project conceived and implemented by Empowering The Poor. This multi-layered project aims at empowering two tent-communities (one in Leogane and another Port-au-Prince) to self-reliance versus providing handouts which perpetuate poverty. This project was born out of the 10-day trip to Haiti, during which Darius Coulibaly and his wife Sophonie witness firsthand the devastation and the psychological toll imposed by the deadly January 12 earthquake. Countless hours of eyeball observations and conversation with those who lost their homes, relatives, friends, and schools, brainstorming with them, and together identifying long terms solutions to help them break the vicious cycle of poverty that traps millions of Haitians. We designed a multi-layered project that will provide decent Shelter, Education, Healthcare, and Micro loans for women.

PHASE I: Collect/ buy, ship, and set up 500 tents and tarps, a Tent-Resource Learning Center, and medical and school supplies to Port-au-Prince Haiti.

PHASE II: Provide small loans ($25-S100) to women in these tent-communities, to start a small business to generate an income. We will use the group rotation model integrated with literacy and community health education. Phase II will not start until phase I is successfully implemented and sustained. Empowering The Poor may partner with another nonprofit organization in Haiti to implement Phase II.
