The purpose of this campaign is to empower HIV positive women and men in Danané and Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa so they may lead productive and sustainable lives with dignity through the supply of microloans integrated with financial, health, and general literacy.
What is the HIV Hope & Dignity Campaign?
The HIV Hope & Dignity campaign is an Empowering The Poor, Inc. fundraising initiative designed to:
- Distribute and manage a loan portfolio made up of 300 poor and HIV positive by June 30, 2011 integrated with financial, health, and general literacy to HIV positive women and men living in poor and rural sub Saharan Africa.
- Build an AIDS health clinic by June 30, 2012 in one of the most AIDS-impacted communities in Swaziland, the highest HIV prevalence rate in sub Saharan Africa. The clinic will provide a comprehensive AIDS services that will include culturally tailored HIV prevention, counseling, testing, and treatment.
Why the Campaign?
- Sub Saharan Africa remains the worst AIDS affected region in the world as it disproportionately represent 68% of people living with HIV in the world.
- Twenty-two and half million people are living with HIV, 61% of whom are women.
- Three-fourths of all HIV positive people in Africa are women between the ages of 15 and 24.
- Generate steady income as $50 loan serves as working capital to start a small business.
- The micro loans help reduce food insecurity and help meet their own and family nutritional needs
- Clients will pay for their antiretroviral (ARV) and adhere to their treatment.
- Boost self-esteem; restore hope and purpose in life.
- Increase general, health, and financial literacy skills.
- To scale up HIV testing, counseling, and treatment in Africa’s poorest and AIDS affected communities.
