Brief Description:
This initiative attempts to raise funds for anti-malarial bed nets for afflicted communities. We purchase and distribute the bed nets, train people how to use them and provide drugs to combat malaria.
Fundraising Goals
July 1,2009 to June 30, 2011 = 27,500 to purchase, travel, and sell 2500 long lasting insecticidal-treated bed nets at a subsidized and affordable price, $1 or less in malaria-endemic communities.
What is Campaign Net-A-Village?
Campaign Net-A-Village is an Empowering The Poor, Inc. fundraising initiative designed to:
- Purchase and distribute 2,500 long lasting insecticidal bed nets across Africa’s poorest and malaria-endemic communities by July 30, 2010.
- Educate and train local populations as community health agents.
- Provide effective anti malaria drugs to health clinics in poor and malaria endemic communities.
Why Campaign Net-A-Village?
- Malaria is the leading cause of child mortality in Africa
- Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria in Africa; an estimated one to two million people die from it every year, yet malaria is a preventable and treatable disease.
- Less than 5% of children sleep under a long lasting insecticidal bed net.
- Malaria is both a cause and consequence of poverty
Why do we sell long lasting insecticidal bed nets at a subsidized price?
- Empowering The Poor, Inc. does not believe in hands out.
- Empowering The Poor, Inc.‘s experience in distributing bed nets indicate that people are more likely to use the bed nets when they buy versus handed them out.
- Just like we use the items we buy at the grocery store, the poor will use more often the bed nets if they pay for them. It’s human nature to value what we pay.
