The purpose of this project is to reach out to at-risk, underpriveleged youth and develop their skills, knowledge, confidence and provide opportunities for success that may not otherwise exist.
The desire is to inspire these students to become active in their communities and build a sense of leadership and self-worth. Community awareness is important as well as career guidance, financial and economic understanding and hope for their future.
Empowering the Poor, Inc. seeks to reach out to local populations and empower youth to become the leaders of their generation. Children and education play a significant role in the success of this country. Many children in our community are living in poverty and are refugees from countries at war and have few opportunities for success. These children of diverse background, language and culture are our main focus. We seek to empower these youth to overcome the many obstacles standing in their way and instill a good sense of higher education, work ethic, community service and overall happiness.
Goals
- Provide after school tutorial services as well as language and study skills enhancement
- Provide leadership skills in the form of financial literacy, job search and retention skills, local and global community outreach activities, and global awareness
- Community service outreach
- Foreign Languages Proficiency
Target Population
- Refugee children in connection with Fredericksburg Baptist Church; around 30 participants
- Culturally diverse population: Refugees from many countries, including Burundi and Pakistan
- Underprivileged youth living in Fredericksburg, VA
