WHAT IS MALARIA?

Malaria is caused by infection of red blood cells
with protozoan parasites of the genus plasmodium. The parasites are
inoculated into the human host by the female anopheles mosquito.
(World Health Organization)
Symptoms
The classic symptoms include:
- Persistent fever,
- shivering,
- joint pains,
- headaches,
- repeated vomiting,
- muscular aches,
- weakness,
- diarrhea,
- and cough.
Untreated malaria causes renal failure, hypoglycemia, anemia,
pulmonary edema, coma, and death. Malaria can be cured if promptly
diagnosed and adequately treated
Malaria Transmission Cycle

IMPACT OF MALARIA
2,000,000 children die every year Reduce farmers and
workers’ productivity Help perpetuate the vicious cycle of poverty.
Increase HIV/AIDS infection (recent research)
RAIN or SHINE, we RUN and WALK 3 miles because:
MALARIA is a Tragedy bigger than Tsunami. Every 30 seconds a
child dies in Africa from malaria.
Millions of malaria victims walk long distances to gather wood,
farm fields and get unclean water for daily needs
Raise funds to enhance literacy and education in our targets
communities. Because malaria is a disease of poverty and a cause of
poverty
Raise Funds to provide 5000 insecticide treated bed nets, anti
malaria drugs, and train women as health educators in our target
communities, among which is Princess Town, Ghana;(Fredericksburg’
sister city.)
Empowering The Poor (ETP) is a Virginia-based
nonprofit, nongovernmental and non partisan organization dedicated
to empowering the poorest communities across sub Saharan Africa
through education, healthcare and microfinance. ETP values the
African woman and the youth as one of the most powerful tools of
poverty alleviation.
We target communities where basic necessities such as health
centers, clean water, schools, latrines, and electricity are almost
non-existent. We work in communities where a child dies every 30
seconds from malaria, where young people, aged 15 to 24 are infected
with HIV every 4 minutes, where 90% of women are illiterate, and
people live on less than $US1 per day.
We deeply believe and live by the popular adage “Give a fish to a
man will feed him for a day; teach how to fish will feed for the
rest of his life”.
Rather than disenfranchising the poor, we are fully engaging them
in our projects. In so doing, the poor becomes a true participant,
and not an outsider looking in.
